Children’s Rights Update: October is National Bullying Prevention Month

[profileleft]Children's Rights[/profileleft]Gomez Trial Attorneys has been championing children’s rights for some time now.  Our children’s rights lawyers fight relentlessly on behalf of young people who cannot necessarily fight for themselves.

One of the most common types of cases that we handle involves bullying.

Bullying is an extremely troubling phenomenon that has garnered a lot of attention in recent years.  We will always do whatever we can to make sure that we promote any cause or effort that brings awareness to bullying.  As such, we’d like to share with the public that October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  An individual can get involved with this cause this month in several different ways.  We will present a few of them below.

Talk to Your Children

If you have children, you need to make the effort to really speak to them as much as possible about what’s happening in their lives.  Bullying can begin as early as preschool.  Kids will sometimes react to anyone who says something, does something or has a look that is somehow defined as “different” from others.

For the most part, children will not simply come out and tell adults, let alone parents, that they are being bullied.  Instead, parents need to watch for warning signs of bullying.  They also need to be proactive in finding out if their child is suffering through this intensely difficult experience.

Pay Attention to Your Children’s Friends

Children tend to become part of a peer group as they move through their school years.  Parents may know the names of their kids’ friends and the names of the parents of these children, but in many cases not much else.  Our duty as adults in preventing bullying extends beyond our own children.  If you notice that one of your child’s friends is acting differently or suddenly withdraws from the peer group altogether, you need to ask questions to find out what could be happening.  Doing so could make an enormous difference.

How to Get Involved

Bullying is a society-wide problem.  Any child who is bullied while growing up can face a lifetime of severe consequences.  Every child we save from bullying can and likely will have an enormously positive impact.  That child’s life will be immeasurably better as will the lives of those around them.  Below are just a few examples of organizations that accept volunteers who can work to stop bullying:

PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center started the National Bullying Prevention Month in 2006.  Any way that you can help will be greatly appreciated by those who are out there every day trying to bring about awareness of this problem.

Seek the Advice of Children’s Rights Attorneys

If you suspect that a child is being bullied and you believe that nothing or not enough is being done about it, you can also seek the advice of children’s rights lawyers who handle these cases every day.

If you find yourself in this position, the children’s rights lawyers at Gomez Trial Attorneys is here to help.  We hope that you’ll spread the message of awareness regarding bullying this month and beyond, and we hope that someday we can look at bullying as something that we collectively overcame.
