Carmela Birnbaum
Trial Attorney
Carmela Birnbaum is a trial attorney at Gomez Trial Attorneys. She is committed to fighting for her clients and guiding them through the personal injury legal process.
Carmela was born and raised in Orange County. As one of six children in her family, Carmela grew up in a bustling household where her Mexican-American mother stressed basic morals, such as treating others with respect, working hard, and being grateful for the little things in life. Carmela’s family was close-knit and a focus on family continues to be the guiding principle in Carmela’s life.
Carmela attended college at UC Berkeley where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. During college, she volunteered at the Student Legal Clinic and Berkeley Own Recognizance Project, both experiences sparking her interest in the legal profession.
After graduating from college, Carmela attended law school at Berkeley Law, again focusing her interests in public service as a summer clerk first at the Legal Aid Foundation of Long Beach and then at the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Carmela returned to her hometown of Orange County after graduating law school and began her first job as a Deputy Public Defender at the Orange County Office of the Public Defender. During her time as a public defender, Carmela tried cases in both juvenile court and adult court.
Carmela began her career in personal injury at a North County San Diego firm where she represented hundreds of clients in their personal injury cases, achieving stellar results for her clients. Seeking new challenges, Carmela made the move to Gomez Trial Attorneys. Carmela believes that Gomez Trial Attorneys truly represents clients in the way that all clients deserve to be represented- with compassion, diligence, and dedication. At Gomez Trial Attorneys, Carmela is on “Team JP,” a trial team. She is grateful to work with the excellent attorneys on her team as well as a top-notch paralegal and legal assistants.
As a “people person,” Carmela immensely enjoys getting to know clients and pushing for their interests. Each client is an individual with specific needs, and Carmela, with her breadth of experience, understands this and fights for her clients with their individual needs in mind. She is closely tied to the San Diego legal community, holding many association memberships. Carmela believes in giving back to the community through volunteer work, a belief shared by Gomez Trial Attorneys. Since her time as a public defender working in juvenile court years ago, Carmela has always enjoyed working with teenagers. Carmela is currently volunteering with the Crawford Academy of Law Mentoring Program. In this program, Carmela and other San Diego attorneys serve as mentors for high school students and attend monthly mentoring sessions.
