Crossing the street on foot is much more dangerous than many people realize. Despite the advancement of technology that has provided walking lanes, visual and audio signals and the like, a fatal pedestrian accident can occur at almost any time and in almost any place. Tragically, that’s what occurred on Thursday morning in Mira Mesa when a woman was killed and her companion seriously injured in a horrific crash. Details of the accident remain somewhat scarce, but police are continuing to investigate the situation. The fact that this whole terrible scene unfolded at a very busy intersection may or may not have had something to do with why it occurred. The area along the main thoroughfare is becoming notorious to locals based on the number of traffic accidents in general that occur there.
KGTV published a story regarding the crash. Those interested in reading it and watching the corresponding broadcast video can find it here. According to the report, the accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. An unidentified 59-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man were crossing the street at the intersection of Mira Mesa Boulevard and Marbury Avenue. At that point, a 26-year-old male was driving a Honda in an eastbound direction on Mira Mesa Boulevard.
According to statements from witnesses, the driver allegedly ran through a red light at the intersection. The Honda collided violently with the pedestrians. The woman was killed at the scene and the male suffered what were described as serious head injuries as well as a broken femur. Police arrived and questioned the driver. No word was given as to what the police determined to be the cause of the accident.
First and foremost, we’d like to offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was killed in this accident. We’d also like to extend our thoughts for the man who was badly injured in hopes that he is able to make a recovery. Finally, we hope that the police investigation comes to a fast and just conclusion so that everyone involved in this terrible incident can begin the difficult work of moving on from a challenging situation.
In addition, this fatal pedestrian accident will now become part of the overall statistics regarding San Diego pedestrian accidents. Every year, more than 1,100 of these accidents take place. In 2015, 78 of these crashes led to at least one fatality. Over 1,000 crashes led to at least one injury. The numbers surrounding these crashes have remained remarkably consistent in recent years, as San Diego is a city with the climate and scenery that is amenable to walking.
We recently featured Circulate San Diego’s list that is known as the “Fatal 15” intersections in San Diego. These intersections are the most dangerous in the county with regards to the likelihood of a fatal pedestrian accident. Those interested in reading the entire list can find it here. The intersection where this crash occurred is not on it. According to available data, a total of three pedestrian accidents took place on Mira Mesa Boulevard in 2015.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that this and other intersections nearby are not dangerous. Intersections on busy streets often invite problems because the streets tend to be wide and motorists tend to be moving at high rates of speed. This intersection does have a crosswalk and signals for pedestrians, so perhaps in the coming days we will learn more about how this crash occurred and who may have been at fault.
