By now, there are no excuses for anyone to be unaware of the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or any other controlled substance, whether it’s legal to purchase and consume or not. Sadly, despite the fact that everyone either knows or should know of these dangers, people still make this terrible mistake with alarming regularity. Police suspect that this is what happened yet again recently when an alleged San Diego DUI accident led to four people being injured including the suspect, who will face a long list of serious criminal charges based on what apparently occurred.
According to a report filed by the Times of San Diego, a link to which can be found here, police attempted to stop the driver of an Acura sedan at the intersection of Imperial Avenue and 53rd Street at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Monday night. The police witnessed the 32-year-old male driver maneuvering the vehicle erratically. Instead of stopping, however, the suspect allegedly took off and led the police on a chase. Soon thereafter, the Acura collided with a Honda sedan nearby. There were three people in the Honda, and all were injured and transported to the hospital. The suspect was also hospitalized. None of the injuries suffered by anyone involved in the crash were specified.
First, we’d like to wish the best for all involved in hopes that they make speedy and full recoveries. Secondly, this suspected San Diego DUI accident will only add to the statistics regarding California DUI accidents and arrests. According to the California Highway Patrol, more than 160,000 people are arrested on suspicion of DUI every year. In addition, more than 16,000 injury accidents occur in the state every year in which alcohol was a factor in the crash and more than 1,000 fatal collisions occur where alcohol was listed as a cause. These are obviously troubling numbers.
If you or someone you love has been injured by a suspected drunk driver, you need to take some actions as soon as possible. Clearly, the first thing you should do is obtain a full medical evaluation even if you do not feel that you have been seriously injured. Secondly, you should file the appropriate insurance claim with your underwriter. Finally, you should seek the help of a San Diego DUI accident attorney who understands what it takes to hold those responsible for this type of harm accountable.
There are many reasons for taking this final step. Insurance companies involved in the aftermath of the crash may not be reasonable with injured people even if fault is clearly defined. Other people face the situation of having to file a claim with their own insurance company because the other driver was not insured. Regardless, you should not attempt to make yourself whole without legal help.
