A rollover crash in Warner Springs on Route 79 kills an on-duty state corrections department officer and his canine partner on Monday, March 25. Sgt. Gil Cortez was 46 years old and worked for California Rehabilitation Center in Norco. The crash happened on Monday morning hear San Felipe road.
Cortez was the front car followed by four other corrections vehicles on their way to perform drug searches at La Cima Conservation Camp in Julian. At this time, it is unknown why or how Cortez lost control of his Crown Victoria. According to another officer, he veered to the left, where the car hit dirt and rocks before flipping several times and landing upright on its wheels in the middle of the road. The officer added that Cortez had been traveling near the 55 mph speed limit on a straight stretch of the highway.
Cortez is survived by his parents, his wife and two children.
