Man Killed in San Diego Motorcycle Accident

by John Gomez | Last Updated: April 28, 2016
San Diego motorcycle accident

Motorcycles are extremely popular in Southern California for obvious reasons:  the weather is amendable to this mode of transportation, the cost of running and maintaining a motorcycle is less than it is for a larger vehicle on average and there are a lot of beautiful sights to see.  That’s why it’s so common for people to see motorcyclists on roads throughout the year.  While motorcycles are fun and less expensive, they are also dangerous like any other form of transportation.  Sadly, we are reminded of just how dangerous motorcycles can be with alarming regularity based on news reports of multiple San Diego motorcycle accidents published on a weekly basis.

Tragically, the people of San Diego received yet another reminder of the exposure to danger faced by motorcyclists within the last few days when the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that a man had been killed in a multi-vehicle San Diego motorcycle accident.  A link to the story can be found here, and the details, as is often the case with these crashes, are troubling in nature.

According to the newspaper, a 57-year-old man was driving his motorcycle in a northbound direction on Santa Fe Street in the Bay Ho part of town on Saturday at approximately 1 p.m.  At that point, the 31-year-old female driver of a Mercedes-Benz allegedly pulled out onto Santa Fe Street from the driveway of a business and into the path of the oncoming motorcycle.  The motorcyclist attempted to avoid the vehicle by veering into the southbound lane, but in so doing he moved directly into the path of a truck that was moving in the opposite direction.  The motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

San Diego Motorcycle Accident Statistics

First and foremost, we’d like to offer our thoughts to the family and friends of the person who was killed in this crash and to anyone else who has been affected by this type of occurrence.  Losing someone suddenly in a traffic accident is a difficult situation for loved ones to overcome.  Secondly, this incident is one of many San Diego motorcycle accidents that occur on an annual basis.  Every year in the county, at least 50 people are killed in motorcycle crashes, and hundreds of others are seriously injured.  That means that at least one person is killed in a San Diego motorcycle accident every week, which is a troubling statistic.
