They say bad things tend to happen in threes. That’s usually a saying that is used in different contexts, but we can all hope that the latest listeria recall is the last one for some time to come. We’ve already covered a massive frozen foods listeria recall and a subsequent listeria recall that dealt with walnuts. Now comes word that yet another listeria recall has been initiated, and this one is being announced by the Quaker Oats Company. As is always the case with recalls, particularly those related to food, everyone who purchases these products needs to check their homes and offices to find out whether or not they have purchased items that are affected by this problem.
According to a story published by NBC 7 San Diego, a link to which can be found here, two lines of products have been recalled. They are:
If you possess any of these products, you should not consume them. Instead, you can contact Quaker Oats either at 800-856-5781 or visit www.quakeroats.com to receive a refund. Fortunately, at this point there have not been any reports of illnesses contracted by consumers as a result of this problem. The reason for the recall is that a supplier for Quaker Oats discovered that some of its sunflower kernels may have been contaminated with listeria.
Listeria is bacteria that, if consumed by humans, can lead to serious health problems. Most prominently, listeria can cause listeriosis. Listeriosis makes just about anyone who contracts it quite ill, but it is particularly dangerous for people who are of advanced age, for infants and for pregnant women. In addition, anyone whose immune system is compromised can face extremely dangerous complications from listeriosis. In some cases, it has been known to be fatal. That’s why companies such as Quaker Oats generally waste no time in announcing food recalls if they discover even the possibility that some of their products have been contaminated.
If you have purchased and eaten any of these products and you feel unwell in any way, you should not take any chances either. Contact your doctor immediately and obtain a full medical evaluation, telling him or her that you have eaten food possibly contaminated with listeria. If you have contracted listeriosis or become ill in some other way after eating contaminated food, you also need to take steps to evaluate your legal rights and options. You should only do so with the help of defective products lawyers who understand how to hold large corporations accountable for the harm they have inflicted on consumers.
