Vehicles Recalled from Multiple Automakers

In recent news Japanese automakers: Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda and Korean automakers: Kia and Hyundai are recalling a total of over 5 million cars with potentially dangerous problems ranging from airbag defects to brake light switches that do not work.

Honda’s concern and reason for recalling more than 1 million cars is due to airbags that may deploy with too much pressure, causing injuries in the front passenger seat, although they have not been informed of any injuries to date. The models said to be affected include Civic and Odyssey; the majority of the recalled vehicles seem to be from the 2001, 2002, and 2003 model years.

Toyota is also recalling over 1 million vehicles due to defective airbags. The models that are being recalled were produced between November 2000 and March 2004, and include the Corolla, Tundra, and Lexus SC. Toyota acknowledges reports of 5 airbag defects with no reported injuries. Unfortunately for Toyota, this is recall is yet another blemish on their well-known name that the general public equates to dependability.

Hyundai and Kia are recalling a total of almost 2 million vehicles for the same defect regarding brake lights switches. According to U.S safety regulators, a malfunctioning switch can prevent the brake light from coming on when the brake pedal is pressed.  The Models affected include the Hyundai: Accent, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, and Veracruz, and the Kia: Optima, Rondo, Sedona, Sorrento, Soul and Sportage. Additionally, Hyundai is recalling the Elantra, model years 2011 through 2013 due to a bracket that may loosen when side airbags inflate, which can potentially cause injuries.

Nissan models being recalled include Cube, X-Trail, Maxima and Teana, manufactured between August 2000 and January 2004. There were no specifics given to why they are being recalled.

Mazda is recalling the RX-8 and Mazda 6, although the model years were not identified and no information was released about the reason for the recall.
