Food Borne Illness: Treasured Harvest Pistachios Recall

by John Gomez | Last Updated: July 15, 2013

A recent Salmonella scare has led to a recall of pistachios; the brand name is Treasured Harvest. Consumers are being urged to destroy or return the contaminated product. The affected product has been sold in four different states including California.

Every year roughly 50 million Americans get sick from eating contaminated food. Of that number, 40,000 or so are reported cases of salmonella poisoning. Symptoms of Salmonella can develop up 72 hours after consuming contaminated food can last up to 7 days. Salmonella can be found in a variety of sources from live animals to vegetables.  There are many ways to prevent salmonella, one of which is cleanliness; washing your hands before handling food especially after contact with animals. Also avoid cross-contamination, cook food throughout and avoid raw food items such as eggs.
